Semillon

Primary to south-west France and the Bordeaux region, specifically Sauternes and Barsac, this grape varietal is prized for dessert wines due its richness and thin skins allowing this grape to be nobly affected by botrytis. Semillon, considered underrated in much of the world, made well can also produce interesting, full-bodied and long-lived dry white wines with satisfying flavors of citrus, honey, and grassiness. However, you may often find this grape blended with Sauvignon Blanc as Semillon has a tendency to be lower in acidity needing the crispness provided by Sauvignon Blanc. Another region to note for this unique grape is Hunter Valley in Australia.

Margaret River, Australia

Margaret River, within the Western Australia zone, is located just south of Perth. Being right on the coast, Margaret River has a warm maritime climate and can see high amounts of rainfall compared to other Australia regions. The most widely-planted varietals here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon. Even with the warmer weather, the grapes and winemakers do a great job at retaining their acidity. This region produces a wide range of wine styles from delicate and elegant to concentrated, fruity and powerful making Margaret River a very approachable and welcoming region to experiment and try something new!

Ashbrook Estate is one of the oldest established wineries in Margaret River. Currently under the watchful eyes of Carol and Brian Devitt, daughter Catherine Edwards, son Richard and son-in-law Kingsley Edwards, Ashbrook has been a family business for over 40 years. Only grapes handpicked and grown on the Estate are used in their wines.
