2017 Grassini Family Vineyards Equipo Red Blend

$40

98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cab Franc, 1% Merlot from Happy Canyon.

This wine is delicious and complex, with blackberry, black currant, bittersweet chocolate and licorice on the nose. The palate packs black plum, black cherry and charred meat with a cocoa finish. Only 304 cases produced.

“Equipo” is the Spanish term for “team,” and the Grassinis are fortunate to have had the same team ever since their vines were first planted in 2002. Vineyard foreman, Manuel, and his crew planted every vine on the estate and they are like family to the Grassini’s. At their annual end-of-harvest picnic several years ago, Sharon Grassini learned that Manuel’s infant son needed life-saving heart surgery. To help defray some of the unexpected costs that come with surgery, the Grassini family organized an emergency fund for not only Manuel’s family, but also to help other members of the vineyard crew with future emergency costs like this. Part of the proceeds from the sale of this wine go toward keeping the “The Equipo Program” going.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Known inherently as the best red grape variety in the world, Cabernet Sauvignon is the epitome of a perfect international traveller. Boasting strong black fruit flavors, It can give distinct characteristics varying by the region and soil it comes from. These bold, concentrated, and age-worthy wines can lay down roots and thrive all around the world.

Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc originating from Bordeaux, France. The rich flavor and high tannin make a perfect pair to flavorsome red meats or simply elegant on their own.

Red Blends Wines

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Central Coast, California

When we speak of Central Coast, CA were including numerous diverse regions from Santa Cruz down through Santa Barbara counties. This encompasses smaller areas such as Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, Monterey AVA, Paso Robles AVA, Santa Maria Valley AVA, Santa Ynez Valley AVA, and Sta. Rita Hills AVA. The Central Coast is responsible for many great value wines from a multitude of grape varietals depending on the climate within the specific designated areas. From the coastal AVA’s with influence from the fog and cooling effects, you will find Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The inland AVA’s are much warmer, like Paso Robles, so look here for outstanding Syrah, Grenache, Zinfandel, or Rhône-style blends.

Northwest of Santa Barbara lies the 40-mile-wide Santa Ynez Valley. At the valley’s eastern edge lies Happy Canyon, an area blessed with warm days and cool marine influences with few variations. Nestled among the quintessencial ridge and valley of this rarified wine-growing region is where you will discover Grassini Family Vineyards and Winery—a tranquil refuge where all the conditions necessary for great wine happily converge.

The location is just inland enough so that a north-south mountain range blocks the Pacific coastal breezes, preventing them from cooling the canyons. While certain grape varieties need substantial warmth during the day to mature, all vines benefit greatly from respites provided by cool nights. The combination of the extreme temperature swings between day and night make Happy Canyon unique and ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes to optimum ripeness and quality.

Larry Grassini’s grandfather, Articondo Grassini, came to the United States from Pisa, Italy in the early 1900s with his wife Afiora Tinucci. He would stay home from church on Sundays to make that evening’s ravioli from the green bounty of his garden, while enjoying a glass of wine (or two)…. He also kept several chickens as part of his garden. “As a nod to Grandpa Articondo, industrious fowl roam our vineyard while sustainably fertilizing the vines.”

Articando was passionate about keeping a garden to grow much of the family’s food. He shared his love for the soil with his children and grandchildren, and this firmly-entrenched earthy tradition has been passed on and is now entrusted to the third and fourth generations.

From day one, Larry’s wife Sharon and daughters Katie, Corey, Mandy and Molly have been there in support of this exciting and enriching undertaking. At Grassini Family Vineyards and Winery, “our passion for beauty, the commitment to hard work and a memorable place all come together to make the wine in bottles bearing our family’s label something special. It is our hope that you will enjoy the poetry of the wine and its sense of place and tradition with your friends and family.”

Articondo would have been proud.
