2018 CARGAUX Syrah

This wine was hand-made by Chase Carhartt, a California native, and Nathalia & Hannes Storm, of Storm Wines, located in the Western Cape of South Africa. This Syrah hails from the cool, maritime climate of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, supported by low-vigor, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soils.

This medium ruby colored syrah reveals itself with aromas of black pepper, dark berry, coffee bean, and dried lavender undertones. The palate highlights flavors of peppered meat, tart blackberry, dried herbs, and cocoa powder. This Syrah’s structured tannin profile makes for a refined wine that is very drinkable at present, but will only benefit from more time in the bottle.

Of the noble grape varieties, Syrah may have the oldest geography and history. The vines origins are thought to date back to one of the world’s earliest wine-producing regions, the city of Shiraz in the Middle East. Now worshipped in the Rhône Valley in France, these dark, dense, and powerful wines can be just as distinct as Cabernet Sauvignon. You’ll find this grape also largely grown in Australia, where it is identifiable as Shiraz.

Sometimes known to be “meaty,” think exotic spices and darker meat dishes to help showcase the complexity of these wines. Syrah needs time to show its greatness, but when it does, you’ll be thankful you had a bottle!

Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa

Hemel-en-Aarde is a small ward within the famous Walker Bay district, an area well exposed to the ocean on the Cape South Coast of South Africa. Although tiny, this area is known for some of the best fruit and wines. With high potential for cool-climate wines, you’ll find great quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir here. Due to the small region being fairly spread out, producers here can be very individualized and unique.

Chase Carhartt, currently produces wine alongside his mom and dad, for Carhartt Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley, nestled in California’s central coast. His parents planted the vineyard in 1996 on the ranch that has been in his family since the early 1950’s, producing their maiden vintage of both Merlot and Syrah in 1998. After graduating with a degree in Enology (winemaking) from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2011, he not only has been making wines for the Carhartt Vineyard brand, but has travelled to various countries around the globe to study classic and progressive farming and winemaking. In addition to working harvests in France, Tasmania, and Argentina, 2019 marked his fourth vintage in South Africa, which has captivated my attention since my first visit in 2010.

The excitement of having a tangible product to show from my experiences abroad is coupled by the opportunity and privilege of being able to share that story and wine with the people who have followed my journey. For those who are familiar with South African wine, and to the many who aren’t, I am honored and extremely excited to unveil this new exploration and hope you enjoy it.
