California’s own jack-of-all-trades grape. Zinfandel can produce a wide range of styles from red, white, and rosé wine with varying sweetness levels. A fruit-forward, concentrated and bold, high alcohol red wine loved for it’s “jammy” fruit, smoky, and spice flavors. There has been much confusion and mystery behind Zinfandel’s origins as it is also Primitivo in Italy, and Tribidrag and Crljenak Kaštelanski in Southern Dalmatia. Believed to stem from Croatia, it is closely related to their #1 red wine, Plavac Mali. What’s not confusing is the potential greatness and quality made from this thrilling grape. Zinfandel is a no-brainer pairing with cooking BBQ on the weekends with your loved ones.

Sonoma County, California

Unknown to many, Sonoma County located in Northern California is actually bigger than its neighbor, Napa County. Sonoma has a famous gap region, known as the Petaluma Gap, that provides a break in the the coastal ranges and is Sonoma County’s newest AVA. The “Gap” is actually a wind gap named after a coastal mountain opening that stretches east from the Pacific Ocean to the south of the San Pablo Bay. Closest to the Sonoma Coast is the famous Russian River Valley AVA known for its high-quality, elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. To the north of the Russian River lies the warmer Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley AVA’s producing a wide range of grape varieties including excellent Zinfandels, Sauvignon Blanc, Rhône varietals (Syrah, Grenache, etc), and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other vineyard areas to watch out for premium wine are Sonoma Coast AVA, Anderson Valley, and Mendocino County.

Picked at low brix to highlight acidity, nerve, and fruit on the bright-red spectrum of Zinfandel. Essential aromatics of bramble-brush and spice remind us what we’re drinking, but the palate, alive with fresh mouth-watering acidity and subtle nuances of fruit are a departure from the expected. Delicacy, finesse – a distilled, pure eau-de-vie focus of flavor has invigorated our fondness for this often less-than-magnificent variety. Inspired by the wines from Beaujolais and Northern Rhone, we harvested early to highlight acidity and fresh fruit. 100% destemmed and fermented in 5-ton stainless steel tanks. Aged for 10 months in neutral French oak barrels.

50/50 blend of Arrowhead and Buck Hill, which both have volcanic soil. Both vineyards have low intervention farming practices using no chemicals or sulfur. For 2017, we added a plot from Buck Hill’s white volcanic ash hillside terrace for the first time.

Owner and winemaker Chris Brockway’s main goal is to bring out, and show you, the natural expression of the grape. For Chris that means spontaneous fermentation, native yeasts and bacteria and minimal intervention. This wine is made naturally, meaning no use of inoculated yeasts or bacteria. They don’t add any powdered tannins or enzymes. A minimal dose of S02 is added 4 weeks before bottling to some wines.
