2018 Ansitz Waldgries Lagrein Alto Adige

100% Lagrein, an ancient grape native to the Italian Alps. It is similar in flavor and texture to Syrah.

Lagrein has a characteristically north-Italian fresh, acidic structure and a slightly astringent finish. It is dense and dark purple/ruby in color. It has aromas of raspberries and plums with spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate, it is a bit lighter than expected with a spry acidity that makes it an excellent food wine.

Traditionally, Lagrein wines are consumed with Speck. This is a wine that works well with warm, hearty winter dishes.

Christian Plattner’s tiny Waldgries estate is located in the Saint Magdalener hills just outside the town of Bolzano in Alto Adige. While your first thought of Alto Adige may be mountains and snow, Bolzano is one of Italy’s warmest cities, due to its location at the focal point of three alpine valleys. Here they excel with red grapes that are more challenging to ripen further up in the mountains where Kerner and Pinot Grigio reign. Both Christian’s Schiava and his Lagrein are stunners. Today, in the surrounding valleys and ski resorts, you can’t go too far without seeing Waldgries on wine lists; in simple mountain chalets or in three star Michelin restaurants, Christian’s wines are well-known as the best of the best.
