2016 Peay ‘Les Titans’ Sonoma Syrah 375ml

A lovely half bottle of cool climate Syrah from the Sonoma Coast. The Les Titans has a smoky, black olive character lightly coating a blackberry and cassis fruit quality. There is some roundness to the mid-palate though there is bright acidity, as always. This wine is yummy right now and will age beautifully for as long as you can hold on to it.

Of the noble grape varieties, Syrah may have the oldest geography and history. The vines origins are thought to date back to one of the world’s earliest wine-producing regions, the city of Shiraz in the Middle East. Now worshipped in the Rhône Valley in France, these dark, dense, and powerful wines can be just as distinct as Cabernet Sauvignon. You’ll find this grape also largely grown in Australia, where it is identifiable as Shiraz.

Sometimes known to be “meaty,” think exotic spices and darker meat dishes to help showcase the complexity of these wines. Syrah needs time to show its greatness, but when it does, you’ll be thankful you had a bottle!

Sonoma County, California

Unknown to many, Sonoma County located in Northern California is actually bigger than its neighbor, Napa County. Sonoma has a famous gap region, known as the Petaluma Gap, that provides a break in the the coastal ranges and is Sonoma County’s newest AVA. The “Gap” is actually a wind gap named after a coastal mountain opening that stretches east from the Pacific Ocean to the south of the San Pablo Bay. Closest to the Sonoma Coast is the famous Russian River Valley AVA known for its high-quality, elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. To the north of the Russian River lies the warmer Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley AVA’s producing a wide range of grape varieties including excellent Zinfandels, Sauvignon Blanc, Rhône varietals (Syrah, Grenache, etc), and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other vineyard areas to watch out for premium wine are Sonoma Coast AVA, Anderson Valley, and Mendocino County.

“Vanessa Wong, Nick Peay and Andy Peay share a passion. That is a good thing since we are in business together as well as in relation. We each discovered wine at different times in our lives, but it led to the same desire. To make wine that engages all of our senses and expresses the characteristics of a piece of land. Yeah, okay, that is not a very unique desire. We felt to attain this height for our palates in our Country, however, we needed to seek cooler climates with longer growing seasons and different terrain to grow Pinot noir and Syrah than currently under vine. We needed truly coastal frontier land.”

Head winemaker, Vanessa Wong, joined Peay Vineyards for their first vintage in 2001. Prior to Peay, she worked at Peter Michael Winery as winemaker and assistant winemaker from 1996-2000. She also has spent time working in France at Château Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac and Domaine Jean Gros in Vosne-Romanée as well as in California at Hirsch Winery and Franciscan.
