Barolo Via Nuova is 100% Nebbiolo grown from 6 different vineyards: Terlo and Liste in Barolo, Ravera e Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba and Gabutti and Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba. This classic Barolo blend combines structure with elegance and complexity, emphasizing the particularities of each vineyard site. This wine can be a bit timid when first opened, some time in the glass (or decanter) will open this wine up and reveal Via Nuova’s alluring ethereal floral and fruit perfumes.

Nebbiolo

Italy’s best kept treasure. Nebbiolo produces some of the greatest wines in the world, but is hardly planted outside of its home country. Famous to Italy’s Piedmont region, look for these twin stars that are 100% Nebbiolo: Barolo and Barbaresco. This renowned grape produces glorious red wine containing complex flavors with high acid and tannin, allowing these babies (in the right hands) to age for years to come. Barolo, Italy

You’ll often hear Barolo associated with some of Italy’s greatest wines. This is because the wine here is grown at altitudes with south-facing slopes (towards the sunlight) allowing the grapes to ripen slowly developing perfumed aromas, sour cherries, herbs, and floral characteristics. Barolo’s are infamous for being the biggest and boldest of the black variety Nebbiolo. In the best years, Barolo will develop high acidity and high tannin with a full body and the potential to continue to develop its characteristics within the bottle. Many Barolo’s will actually benefit in complexity and structure from further bottle aging. These wines can be sourced from different villages or purely from one village, which would then be stated on the label. The best wines here will come from a single-named vineyard or “cru.” In Barolo DOCG, the primary designated area, the wine must be made entirely from the Nebbiolo grape, spend 18 months in oak, and aged for three years before release. 

“It was a very exciting time when I started. This group of friends and I, the “Barolo boys” as they’re called now, were always exchanging suggestions and ideas. We wanted to make Barolo the best we could.” says Chiara Boschis, owner of E Pira e Figli.

“I remember in 1994, Giorgio (Rivetti) and I went around at night to green harvest so that the neighbors wouldn’t see how many bunches we were cutting. When my father saw the next day he said I was throwing away money, he was traditional and didn’t understand. But you know, I think when you want to do something completely different, you have to do it your own way.”

E Pira e Figli is a key player in the history of Barolo. The Pira family, whose members have been vignerons for generations, started producing and bottling wine at the end of the 19th century, receiving immediate recognition for their stellar quality.

When the Pira lineage ended tragically with the death of Luigi Pira, the estate was sold to the Boschis family, of Giacomo Borgogno FigIi. Chiara Boschis took the reins in 1990 with a clear vision of what she wanted to accomplish; to marry the extra­ordinary power of Barolo with approachability, enticing elegance, and lush, intense aromas. She vinifies exclusively from proprietary vineyards, located in the very best crus of Barolo: Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Via Nuova and Mosconi, for a grand total of 32 acres.

Annual production is a miniscule 5,000 cases. In the time Chiara has run the estate, she has quickly become a ‘Superwoman’ in the area, as one of only a few female winemakers in the Langhe. Her wines are also no strangers to the limelight, regularly garnering high praise from international publications.

Chiara is a farmer first. As a winemaker, she is a master of balance, crafting finessed and sophisticated wines that are some of the most aromatically dynamic expressions of Barolo today.
