2013 Salicutti Piaggione Brunello di Montalcino

from Tuscany, Italy

$112

This is an incredible wine with precision and focus. On the nose it has hints of strawberry compote, black cherry, and tobacco. On the palate the wine develops even more with a little orange zest, cassis, and a long smokey finish. This wine continues to develop for hours on end. Drink now through 2036.

Salicutti was founded by Francesco Leanza, recently retired, who sold the winery to Felix and Sabine Eichbauer – longtime customers of his who own a Michelin – starred restaurant in Munich. Podere Salicutti was the first certified organic winery in the Montalcino appellation and the winery is currently in conversion to biodynamic farming. They produce small production Brunello sourced from just the vineyards surrounding the estate (uncommon in an appellation where producers tend to have vineyards scattered throughout the appellation). These are some of the most elegant, traditionally made wines in the appellation.
